MASN - Austria

MASN - Austria is a center of excellence and networking office for culture and social anthropological innovations and projects which was founded in 2005. It originates from the Moving Anthropology Student/Social Network initiated in Vienna which aims to connect young anthropologists on an international level.
Associates of MASN - Austria work empirically, solution oriented and relevant to present times.

Associates of the centre command regional, linguistic and disciplinary skills in several fields, as in migration and integration, globalisation, law & anthropology, gender studies, visual anthropology, medical anthropology, consciousness studies, business and organisational anthropology, development cooperation, as well as peace work, research on conflict and violence.

Kerstin Tiefenbacher

imageBorn in 1979 in Bregenz, Austria. Social- & Cultural Anthropologist, received her master degree in Social and Cultural Anthropology in 2005 and the diploma „Academic Latinamericanist“ in 2009 at the University of Vienna. Research fields: Gender Studies, Feminist Anthropology, Medical Anthropology; Fieldwork in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 2004, 2008 and 2009 [and upcoming 2010/2011]. From 2006 – 02/2010 staff member of the Department of Cultural and Social Anthropology, University of Vienna (student assistant) and of the Austrian Latin America Institute (EU projects for scientific cooperation between the EU and Latin American Countries). Martin Alois Luger

imageBorn 1978 in St.Pölten.
Studied Cultural and Social Anthropology and Philosophy in Vienna with special interests in Cyberanthropology, Cognitive Science and Epistemology.

Feldenkrais practitioner since Feb. 2009, currently in training to become a psychotherapist.
Dissertation about triune rhetoric in ritual, psychotherapy and cyberspace.

imageBorn in Vienna 1979. Civil Service at the Organisation Arbeiter Samariterbund in 1999. University degree as a Social Anthropologist, finishing a combination Study of International Development, a variety of lectures at the University of Vienna and at the University of Applied Arts. Working fields: Assistance at an educational and art projekt with favela kids in Recife, Brasil (2005); Implementation of a social campaign fort he Organisation Kinderfreunde Austria (2006). Field research and documentations on the topics: action art in public places, Situationism, Migration and Religion, Minority rights, Water and Health, Springwater in Austria. Contact:

Katja Seidel

imageBorn 1979 in Innsbruck
Social anthropologist with a focus on Legal Anthropology, Violence and Conflict Studies;
regional orientation: Argentina, Central America and the Caribbean (African Diaspora).
Especially I’m interested in the evaluation of theory and practice and the local practices and articulations of cosmopolitan human rights
Currently:
External Lecturer at the University of Vienna and former staff member at “A letter to the Stars”
PhD Candidate National University of Ireland Maynooth.
Dissertation topic: A culture of resistance. H.I.J.O.S. and the meaning of justice in the aftermaths of state terror and genocide.
Photography and film (Diploma Leyserstrasse) provide me with yet another main pillar.

Marija Martinovic

imageGeboren 1978 in Nis. Studium der Volks- und Völkerkunde an der Universität in Belgrad und Kultur- und Sozialanthropologie an der Universität Wien. Gregor Jakob

imageBorn 1979 in Linz (Austria), he studied social and cultural Anthropology along with international development studies, anthropology of law as well as media studies. Lecturer at the department of social and cultural anthropology. His main focus in recent research is in the strategies of everyday praxis within the field of NGOs and Social Movements as well as gender studies. The main regional focus is within northern India. Besides he is involving himself in radio journalism.

Julia Bartl

imageBorn in Munich 1983. Studied social and cultural anthropology and oriental studies in Vienna. European MA in anthropology (Vienna, Stockholm). Longer travels to South-East Asia and language courses in Morocco (2006) and Syria (2007). Internship at the Museum of Ethnology in Vienna (2007).
Research interests: migration and transnational studies, minorities/majorities, identities, peace- and conflict studies, power distribution, social equality. Regional interest: Europe, Middle East.

Martha Cecilia Dietrich

imageBorn 1983 in Vienna. Degree in Latin American Studies (LAI-Vienna 2006) as well as in Social Anthropology (University of Vienna 2008) with a specialization in Visual Anthropology and Media Anthropology particularly in Latin American contexts. Since 2009 also a MA in Visual Anthropology graduated at Manchester University. Occasional lectureships at the department of Social Anthropology in Vienna. Today I am back in Manchester, but this time enrolling as a Phd student in Visual Anthropology supported by the Universities Alumni Grand.

Kathrin Salzmann

imageGeboren 1981 in Bregenz.
Studium der kulturellen Anthropologie und Soziologie der nicht-westlichen Gesellschaften an der Universität Utrecht, Niederlande mit Schwerpunkt auf Gender und EZA (Ma.Sc. 2005). Tätigkeit in diversen NGOs (Centrum voor internationale Samenwerking, Women without Borders) 2009 Bachelor of Education an der Pädagogischen Hochschule Wien. Seit 2010 als Lernbegleiterin an der Lernwerkstatt Brigittenau (Wien) tätig.

Mascha Gugganig

imageFields of interest involve anthropology of education, childhood and youth, and indigenous education. Further on, visual anthropology, museum studies, and ecological anthropology with a focus on genetic engineering.
Exchange studies in London, field research in Hawaii. Work experiences as educational advisor for issues of global learning at schools, as cultural consultant at different museums, and as camp counsellor for children. Trained in pedagogy of play. Currently PhD student at UBC in Vancouver. Languages: German, English, potential skills in Czech and French.
